I was born in Barry, South Wales,
United Kingdom in October 1962. Unlike most
of the people I grew up with, I still live in Barry.
Barry is situated on the coast of the Bristol Channel, about 8 miles
south-west of Cardiff, the Capital City of Wales. Barry became very successful
as a coal exporting port about 100 years ago but today the port is far less
busy. Chemicals keep the ships coming and going, and form the major industry in
the area, whilst much of the land surrounding the original port area has been
re-developed into high grade housing and a shopping development. Barry has also
been famous as the location of Woodham Brothers salvage yard, which became a
haven for steam railway preservation movements because David (Dai) Woodham
bought up a large number steam locomotives and other rolling stock as they were
obsoleted by diesel traction, but kindly cut up only a very few of them ensuring
their survival through restoration.
By the way, the photo above is now 20 years old. It was taken on a business trip to Japan. I really must replace it with something more recent.
